Pink Floyd Background:

Reminding us of the days when the vinyl disc was king, Pink Floyd emerged on the music scene in 1965. The band’s leads, Nick Mason Rick Wright and Roger Waters met while attending an architectural course in the UK.  Pink Floyd hit its musical stride in the 1970′s when they released the hit ablums:

  • The Dark Side of the Moon
  • Wish You Were Here
  • Animals, and The Wall

Like most bands, except for U2, Pink Floyd has scene many incarnations as both the band members and music have changed and evolved over the years.

We have great tickets for the Lakers Celtics Game 6 at the Staples Center. There are upper level center court seats and lower level seats.

The Lakers took a hit in Sunday’s game and will be back tomorrow in Los Angles at the Staple Center to play for the “WIN” in games 6 & 7 of the NBA finals. The stats really tell the story about yesterday’s game. If you caught the game on TV you probably caught the 4th quarter commentary and stats that showed the Celtics starters with points in the double digits.

In contrast, the Lakers starters had  points in the single digits. Only Kobe Bryant, who single-handedly scored 19 points in the third quarter with 38 points overall, had double digits.

The game was really lost on several fronts, rebounds, scoring and defense. For most of the game. The Celtics were trending with a 66% shooting average. In case you missed that- a 66% shooting average for a basketball team is pretty incredible.

Other big key  factors in the Celtics win on Sunday were Paul Pierce and the teams ability to play cohesively and execute. There were points when the Celtics gave us pure NBA poetry swinging the ball across the court, pushing the fast-break and delivering the score.  Ray Allen was nestled near the basket where he scored several times against the Lakers defense. The Celtics scored 46 points in the paint according to Bleacher Report, (bleacherreport.com/articles/405708-did-the-los-angeles-lakers-just-wet-the-bed).

Oh yeah- the Celtics also came up with a few phenomenal blocked shots. The blocked shot by Tony Allen where he seemingly flew across the court to block a shot on the glass was phenomenal.

“You Can’t Shut Me Down, I’M Kobe Bryant…”

No story would be complete without mention of Kobe. The 38 points only tells a part of Kobe’s story in game 5. Kobe Bryant took shots off-balance hitting all net. He took shots on balance including an incredible Kobe alley-oop that defiantly stated,

Related NBA Finals Articles:

According to Rivals.com, The big deal is unmistakable: The Lakers need to get tougher, stronger and smarter to beat Boston. Yes, they’ve regressed, Bryant confessed. Milk-carton defense, he called it. For that to happen this deep into the Finals, against this team, it was downright disconcerting to the best player on the planet. He was walking toward the bus Sunday night, on his way out of the Garden and back to L.A. for Game 6, trying to come back on a championship series, on a Celtics franchise that has been the bane of these Lakers for 50 years.

Lakers Game Wrap

5 Things that will help the Celtics in Game 2:

The Lakers-Celtics Game 1 gave a us a finals ready Lakers team matched against the regular season Celtics. The Celtics struggled. In Game 2 of the NBA Finals, the Celtics will need, focus, tenacity, and, well, fire in the pants. Most importantly they need to execute on both ends of the court over-and-over again.

From the Lakers bench, we have all seen the pictures of Kobe in the zone where he seems to be playing the game in his mind and winning. Make no mistake Kobe-in-the-zone means the “…roof is on fire” and Kobe is a defensive /offensive threat. Not to overstate, but, Kobe can be like a force of nature returning to each game scoring double figures, if not a triple double.  His play unfolds just like he has played it a thousand times before-flawlessly.

cheap tickets

All that said, the Lakers have been and can be beaten. Rajon Rondo, Kevin Garnett, Raheed Wallace and the rest of the men in green need to find a raison d’ etre, a reason for being.  Keep in mind that,  ”historically in the NBA, the team that wins Game 1 has won the series 78 percent of the time and the team that wins Games 1 and 2 has lost the series only 14 times*.

Translation: the Celtics need to win (no pressure)

The Boston Celtics will need to show-up at the Staples Center bearing the following NBA Finals gifts:

  1. Rebounds
  2. Shots in the paint
  3. Rajon Rondo shooting & assisting
  4. Pierce, Allen, & the rest of the bench playing on all cylinders

Finally, the Celtics will need fewer fouls and still fewer turnovers.

Listening to the Celtics versus Lakers game on the radio was far more exciting than watching the game.  On my way home I listened to the ESPN sports announcers banter about the game, the best players, and whose jersey should be on the wall. I imagined a fast paced end-to-end basketball battle. Hearing the roar of the Staples Center crowd, I likened the game to the East vs West matches of old where green clad Celtic giants battled the legendary Lakers. I imagined Kobe and Pau Gasol bringing incredible game matched by the Celtics Rajon, Pierece, Allen, and the Big Baby.

However, I could not see the turnovers, fouls or the one shot-no rebound wonders of the Celtics. I would have not have expected the Lakers to out rebound the Celtics by such a large margin.

By the time I got home to see the second half, I was dismayed. There were the occasional great shots; but, I expected more from both teams.  Where were these titans of basketball. I am chalking up game 1 of the playoffs to a kind of shaking out the ghosts of series past and finding the rhythm for both teams.

The NBA Playoffs series opener is less than 24 hours away. Every NBA fan wants to see the Celtics vs Lakers series.  However, tickets to the NBA playoffs don’t come cheap. One hundred dollars will getting great parking near the Staples Center.  Valet costs a wee bit more.

Dig in your pocket for two more Ben Franklins and you will get into an upper level seat. Your view from these Staples center seats will likely be similar to the one on the left.  However, don’t despair about the view. The big screen will capture and replay every angle for you.

But let’s be real. The fun of getting Lakers-Celtics tickets is to watch and be in the action, and hang with wildly exuberant fans who talk smack. Die hard fans will wear their lucky Lakers jersies, the same jersies they wore to church under their clothes on Sunday and prayed to be blessed. They will be down for a row with the Celtics and any fan who dares sport the green jersey or hat.

The Celtics have a bench steeped in talent and versatility. The Lakers, not just Kobe, Artest, Gasol, the team will need to bring their A game and take no prisoners.

happy father's day ideasFather’s Day always poses a conundrum. Last year I sent him meats for grilling. He raved about the variety pack all summer. He had his choice of:

-filet mignon
-bacon wrapped scallops
-lobster
-aged t-bones
-burgers

The meat mélange was the gift that kept giving. Bi-weekly, I would receive the grilling update. Grinning ear-to-ear, he would recount the latest BBQ adventure.

How do you beat the gift that just keeps giving?

You don’t…

Scouring the gift idea sites, I stumbled upon pretty nifty presents like watches, wine, golf gear and gadgets. However, I need a “BIG” follow-up. The t-shirts and mugs with my “mug” will join the “I heart Dad” collection tucked securely in a box under the stairs.

My Dream Father’s Day gift idea is a Pu-Pu platter of  memorabilia, fun and hijinx. Here is what I would do if there were not 3,000 miles separating us.

  • 8:00 AM Go to his house & start making pancakes-Polaroid or disposable to capture the moment
  • 10:47 Reveal let the games begin.. Give  First clue to the surprise-an envelope with a hint embedded in a limerick [snapshot/photo Op]
  • 11:00 AM Pack the car, disposable cameras, and get on the road.
  • 11:30 AM pick-up his girlfriend, give him another hint and take him to the driving range where he can school me on swing
  • 1:00PM grab a quick bite and pass another clue, and
  • Destination: The NBA Playoffs, where he will see his favorite team fight to the death

k, I know Dustin Hoffman… But, who is Dustin Pedroia and why do I want to have breakfast with him?

I ran across a KISS 108 radio contest where you can win a day at Fenway and breakfast with Dustin Pedroia. I’ll admit it I am not a big baseball fan and my first thoughts were:

  • breakfast with this guy?
  • well, is he funny?
  • what kind of food- are we talking buffet?
  • why do I want to meet him?

Determined to find out why there was such a big fuss about this guy, I did a bit of research on Pedroia, aka “Pedey” to loyal fans.

Turns out Dustin has skillz’. Known as a gritty talented 2nd baseman, Pedroia is said to be the “new face of baseball” ( by some in Boston). He is an all around  player can  who can hit, steal bases, play defense and bring results whether playing at home or away. In some odd way, his small stature seems to make him bigger than life. He is a power hitter. If you want to know more about Pedroia’s game stats, check out Bleacher Report, Fangraphs, or Ultimate Rating Zone.

Here are a list of some of the awards Dustin has won:

  • Rookie of the Year
  • Golden Glove
  • Most Valuable player
  • World Series Ring
  • Silver Slugger
  • 7th player to lead the American League in hits, runs and doubles
  • MLB ’09: The Show,  video game

Ok- he is a rock star athlete and baseball player, but, why eat with him?

He is said to be a bot abrasive and full of himself which when you look at the list of achievements, kind of makes sense. Imagine having breakfast with a guy who has the chutzpah to say, ” I’m about to put the Red Sox Nation on my back…” (source)  From what I can gather, he is big on heart, drive and humor. Most importantly, he is the “Real Thing”.  Sift through the articles, videos, and hype and you will find  common threads like that he is

  1. a player who defies the odds and is spurred onto glory by critics
  2. a trash talker, with a sense of humor
  3. genuine
  4. a tenacious player who loves the game
  5. held in high regard by his peers

Why would I eat breakfast with Dustin Pedroia-or maybe, the better question is why wouldn’t I want to eat breakfast with Dustin?

My take, breakfast will be an experience you will not soon forget. Not just because he is a great baseball player; but, also because of the person.

I will be looking out for Pedroia when he comes to town.

“Wanna play handclap?”

Awesome-remake of  Lady Gaga’s Telephone by @yassergaga. Yassergaga and his crew pull of an amazing fun reamke or parody of lady  Gaga’s telephone video. They called it t-telephone. This team pretty much nails the dance steps, fight scene, and lines. Their improv on the original video is pretty fun as well.  They truly set a high bar for their performances.

Thanks for sharing this great video and making us all sing, dance and laugh with you.

The headline read:

Rihanna Throws Shade To Lady GaGa

The piece discusses what is likely a passing comment by Rihanna about the tensions between  music video artistry and the politics of sponsorship and product placement.

Is there such a thing as too much product placement?

Perhaps. While I noticed  the products in the video, I was really more focused on the Telephone video content and the abundance of  pop references neatly woven into the theme including nods to Michael Jackson,  Janet Jackson,  Kill Bill, Thelma and Louise, Wonder Woman and possibly Natural Born Killers, et. al.  Admittedly, it is possible that I am desensitized  to the product placement puffery. Easily entertained by anything shiny and new, I will gladly trade the product endorsements for arcade game sounds, Diet Coke hair rollers and pop-up poison recipes.

Maybe, I am less critical of the video because I recognize the roadside diner where Wonder Bread and Miracle Whip are standard fair.  I have been to that “diner” where I can get a ham-n-cheese sandwich on white bread with waxy shiny American cheese slices, a choice of iceberg lettuce salad or fries; apple pie a la mode, and chocolate milk. The diner and the products used evoke nostalgia, context and  a slice of Americana. For me the Telephone video gives us a modern day pulp fiction vignette/novella with a dash of  Manga and handfuls, gobs really of culture.

Still, I am curious about the product placement question. I decided to watch the video again and again to get a rough count of the number of  brands included in the video.

I counted the number of product appearances by scene like dancing in the kitchen, making sandwiches in the kitchen,  and the fight scene.

My product placement scavenger hunt yielded the following for the GAGA telephone video:

  • Gaga headphones
  • Virgin Mobile Phone
  • Miracle Whip
  • Wonder Bread
  • Diet Coke hair rollers(maybe we can take away one or two cans for creativity?)
  • Plenty-O-Fish
  • Computer
  • others? I definitely may have missed something.

The Telephone Video Stats:

  • Runtime: 9 minutes  30 seconds
  • Total number of products: 9 (+/-)
  • Average product placement: 1 product every 30-60 seconds.
  • (reality: the product placements are concentrated in a 3-4 min. segment)

Ok,  I guess, I can see how viewing a product an average of  once every 30-60 seconds could be overkill.

Still, I have a nagging question. Let’s assume commercial music videos have a couple of primary objectives including art, entertainment, promotion, and marketing. A great video can lead to sales across several channels including concert tickets, CDs, ringtones,  endorsements, merchandise, merchandise, and more merchandise. According to Dayo Olaopade of  TheRoot.com, “20 percent of Rihanna’s revenue comes from ring tones” (theroot.com/views/new-monster-controls-concerts?page=0,0). A  fans desire to purchase the ringtones can be attributed to radio air time,  music videos, peers, CDs and other sources.

My question:

Are we surprised to see products placed in music videos which are themselves glossy artistic vehicles for promotion and marketing?

I for one am not surprised to see products. I just don’t want it to become a habit…
